Originally, we planned to breed Nahko (outcross) X Sable in 2024, and Dusk (outcross) X Sable in 2025. Unfortunately, Dusk had other ideas... and they had an unplanned/accidental mating.
On New Years Eve, I moved some of our dogs around into different enclosures/different groups, so that all of our dogs could be safely locked inside while the fireworks were going off... and I opened the doors to let them back out again around 1am (with the plan to move them all back to their original enclosures the next day).
I put Dusk together with Sable, since they get along fine together, and I woke up several times during the night to feed our newborn baby.
Around 6am on the morning of 01.01.2024, I heard squeaking, and I saw Dusk and Sable stuck together. As soon as they broke apart, I immediately separated them into different enclosures, and I carefully inspected Sable, but there was no swelling / no sign of any bleeding... nothing.
It was very strange because there was no sign of her being in heat at all, at that time or anytime since then.
I immediately informed the COB about it, just to let them know what happened, and I decided to get Dusk's health testing completed ASAP just to be safe (although I have/had no plans to breed him until the summertime).
Thankfully, he passed all of the required health testing (as well as pituitary dwarfism) with excellent results.
In the meantime, we couldn't see anything on the ultrasound scans that we did 28 days later and 35 days later, so it seemed it was a false alarm. There were no other signs of pregnancy; however, she started to fill out a little bit in the past couple of weeks. Based on the date when the mating took place (01.01.2024) her due date should have been around 4 March, so we took her for an x-ray on 1 March and, sure enough, she was pregnant and we counted 6 puppies.
Since we weren't tracking ovulation, as we didn't know that she was in heat at that time, I wasn't sure when her actual due date will be... and now we know: Sable's puppies were born on 13 March (this explains why nothing was visible on the early ultrasound scans).
The one and only mating was on 01.01.2024 so it seems the mating took place very early in her heat cycle, but there was no actual sign of any heat cycle after that.
Thankfully everything went smoothly and, although it was a long night, she gave birth to 7 strong and healthy puppies without any complications.
