Health Tests

The International Tamaskan Register (ITR) has extensive health testing requirements for all registered breeders and we are proud to be part of an organization that takes health testing seriously. In accordance with ITR rules, our adult breeding dogs are all fully health tested: hips and elbows x-rayed under general anesthesia and then officially scored via the British Veterinary Association (BVA), eyes examined by a licensed veterinary ophthalmologist, and heart examined according to OFA Basic Cardiac protocol.

Digital copies of the health testing examinations and certificates, including the x-rays of each dog's hips and elbows, can be found on their Profile Pages: MALE STUD DOGS and FEMALE BREEDING DOGS and PAST TAMASKANS. Our adult breeding dogs have also been DNA profiled via MyDogDNA and/or EMBARK. The results are all set to PUBLIC and are listed on their Profile Pages.

Moreover, our puppies are all individually DNA profiled via MyDogDNA / EMBARK before they go to their new homes. Here are all of the MyDogDNA results and EMBARK results for every Sylvaen Tamaskan (adult breeding dogs + puppies) that we've tested so far. (All of the results are set to PUBLIC.) Each of our puppies also comes with their own EU Pet Passport, which includes documentation of all the deworming treatments and vaccinations.

Health Guarantees

In the unfortunate event that your Sylvaen Tamaskan puppy cannot be used for breeding due to a genetically-inherited health problem (such as: cryptorchidism, epilepsy, Addison's disease, heart defect, etc) your puppy must be castrated / sterilized. Your puppy may then be kept as a pet and you are entitled to an additional Sylvaen Tamaskan puppy, from a different / future litter, at half price. To receive an additional Sylvaen Tamaskan puppy at half price, you must provide adequate documentation (issued by a licensed veterinarian) confirming your puppy's genetically-inherited health problem, and that your puppy has been castrated / sterilized.

In the unfortunate event that your Sylvaen Tamaskan puppy is subsequently diagnosed with a hereditary defect (genetically-inherited health problem) that causes your puppy to die and/or necessitates its euthanasia during the first TWO YEARS (24 months) of its life, you are entitled to a replacement Sylvaen Tamaskan puppy, from a different / future litter, at no extra cost. To receive a replacement Sylvaen Tamaskan puppy, you must provide adequate documentation (issued by a licensed veterinarian) confirming your puppy's death or euthanasia.

Health Issues

Overall, the Tamaskan breed is relatively healthy with very few genetically-inherited disorders. This is predominantly due to extensive health testing, so that only healthy dogs are allowed to breed, but it is also the result of ITR breeders reporting all serious health issues so that carriers (and potential carriers) can be identified. Therefore, reputable breeders can ensure that carrier (or potential carrier) bloodlines are not purposefully crossed, thereby preventing future 'at risk' offspring.

The Tamaskan breeding program has an open studbook and new carefully-selected outcrosses are added to the genepool on a regular basis. This means that the breed as a whole has a very low COI (level of inbreeding) and, therefore, not as many recessive disorders compared to most closed-studbook purebred dog breeds. Notable health issues in the Tamaskan breed, which only affect a very small percentage of the overall population, include: hip dysplasia, cryptorchidism, degenerative myelopathy, epilepsy, Addison's Disease, juvenile cataracts, and digestive problems / food allergies.
